I’ve been using GeForce Now personally for around 8 months now. Though I own a gaming PC, it’s proved invaluable while traveling or at LAN parties. An Android client also means you can start it up on your phone, much like xCloud. It’s going to be extremely interesting to see how Microsoft’s xCloud and Google Stadia respond to this. Stadia currently costs £119 just to get on board with its premier edition, and you have to purchase titles again from its very limited library....

A ‘scene’ group known as CODEX has fully cracked Zoo Tycoon: Ultimate Animal Collection, a somewhat unpopular remaster of the classic. It’s unlikely many pirates will be excited about this game, but it could have ramifications for going forward. The game had five flavors of DRM, including MSStore, UWP, EAppX, Xbox Live, and Araxan. Araxan has similar properties to another popular DRM, Denovo. It makes use of Virtual Machines, which appear to significantly impact the performance of some games....

Specifically, Premium users now get uploading support for Power BI Desktop (.PBIX) files that are up to 10 GB in size. This is a 10x increase compared to what was previously available. It is common for Power BI datasets to be highly compressed, holding data volumes multiple times their size. The new increased file size support means Power BI Premium supports larger datasets more easily. Users will not have to change the process for managing files....

According to ZDNet, the digital assistant is moving to Experiences & Devices. A Microsoft spokesperson confirmed the change, with Petri’s Brad Sams adding that Cortana will be “nested inside of Office”. Sams says the Office team has been pressuring AI head Harry Shum to move the assistant under its umbrella for some time. It’s clear that Microsoft is a little unclear about the future of its product, but it knows it wants to move away from the assistant idea....

This move may raise a few eyebrows because Beaumont has largely been a critic of cybersecurity vendors like Microsoft. Certainly, he has argued against the companies cyber security efforts in the past. Despite that criticism, Beaumont argues it is now time to “put m career where my mouth is”. He thinks the cybersecurity industry is in an equivalent stage as black and white television. Beaumont points to the ability of bad actors to bring down major organizations with relatively simple tools....

ITHome reports that Samsung is working on a Windows 10 Mobile version of the Galaxy S8. The company’s current flagship was launched last month and, of course, runs the Android OS. However, the report suggests the South Korean company will release a new variant of its handset. Interestingly, it is also said that the handset will be launched by Microsoft on May 2. The company is holding an event on that date and will apparently release new hardware....

The option will let users adjust the intensity of each audio frequency in intervals, boosting bass, mids, or highs as they wish. This should let them better adjust for the audio hardware they’re listening on or create presets based on genres that are tuned to their preferences. The feature appears to work via a simple slider that basically any user can wrap their head around. Though there are many Windows programs and audio drivers and achieve the same result, the inclusion in the web app is significant....

According to iFixit’s report on the Surface Book 2, the news is not good. Indeed, the firm has given the product a lowly one out of 10 score. The company found that the laptop hybrid is glued into place at each access point. The best was to open the device at these points is to heat the glue slightly before using prying tools. While things get a little simpler inside, the Surface Book 2 is still complicated....

Featuring USA gymnast Katelyn Ohashi, the TV commercial pitches the Surface Duo against the athlete. Microsoft sets a series of challenges for Ohashi and the Duo to perform. It shows the Surface Duo playing a cat meme videos, drawing with the Surface Pen, and opening, closing, and flipping in its various form guises. The ad does not touch on the Duo’s clear business-centric concept and feature set. In other words, this seems to be a direct play for Microsoft to drum up more interest amongst normal consumers....

Canalys CEO Steve Brazier says Microsoft’s chief, Satya Nadella, will soon want to sunset Surface. While that seems very unlikely to us, Brazier says Nadella is a “software guy, a cloud guy”. He also says of the products, “…overall they are not making money. It doesn’t make sense for them to be in this business.” Brazier was not alone in his belief, but before that let’s look at the two points he raises....

If you are unfamiliar with iFixit, the company tests hardware to reveal how easy repairs are to make. Customers buying the Surface Pro 6 will certainly not be making repairs to the device themselves. Indeed, iFixit says the hybrid is as hard to repair as any of its predecessors. Aside from Intel’s 8th generation quad-core CPU, iFixit says the Pro 6 is almost equal to last year’s Surface Pro. In fact, the company is somewhat scathing of the product, calling it a Surface Pro + Black, referencing the new black colorway....

The news comes just days after authorities accused Telegram of violating legislation in the country. Regulator Roskomnadzor has threatened to block Telegram unless valuable information is released. Specifically, the authority says the company has so far refused to do so. The FSB is the secret service agency in Russia, a replacement for the Cold War-era KGB. In a statement released Monday, it says the messaging platform has given “terrorists the opportunity to create secret chat rooms with a high degree of encryption....

The Redmond giant set a date of later this year, but that was only half true. Microsoft crushed people’s dreams in October with a Store listing of Spring 2018, but that’s not the end of the story. It seems Microsoft’s initial release date of December 1st still holds for businesses. As noted by Neowin, the company’s partner Insight is offering it in two different variants. Both have a Core i5 7300U processor, but vary on memory and storage options....

Microsoft responded in part, saying that it plans to keep the data public and that they want to “make that data useful in lots of new ways.” However, it recently became clear that Microsoft is preventing startups from accessing public profile data, and a U.S. judge has now ruled against the practice. For the unfamiliar, SmartScreen is an Edge service that attempts to prevent users from visiting malicious sites. It does so by checking it against a list of known scam websites. It can be disabled in settings. As pointed out by former Microsoft network, privacy, and security principle PM Eric Lawerence, the disclosure of URLs isn’t something Microsoft hides....

That said, the Facebook-owned app has increasingly expressed its desire to introduce more productivity-minded features. With that in mind, the introduction of task management this week is an important step. WhatsApp hasn’t built a task management tool from the ground up. Instead, the company has teamed with Any.do to integrate its task manager into its service. Found by Android Police, the integration allows users to set reminders and tasks on WhatsApp....

According to Reuters, the company is working with Indian startup Proto to provide the judgment, which will return ‘true’, ‘false’, ‘misleading’, or ‘disputed’. It’s also working with Dig Deeper Media and Meedan to provide tools to verify content. The messages collected during the tipline’s functioning will be used to build a database of content to better detect it in the future. It’s clear that the misinformation is a concern in the country, with Facebook recently cracking down on 712 accounts linked to Indian political groups and Pakistani military....

Attackers reportedly send SRTPC packets to target phones until it causes a buffer stack overflow. A WhatsApp spokesperson said it became aware of the issue in March and has fixed the issue in the app’s latest update. Users must be on version 2.19.51+ on iOS and 2.19.134+ on Android to be safe. The spokesperson said an unknown number of people were affected by the hack, but a number at least in the dozens would not be inaccurate....
