Microsoft says the problem is affecting all markets but not all machines or accounts. The company adds the problem has been live since 8:30AM PST. “Some users might be experiencing problems with instant messages (chat). There might be delays with sending or syncing messages,” the company explains on the Skype Status website. Updates will be posted throughout the day to keep users in the loop on the problem, potential downtime, a fix, and when Skype Instant Messaging will return to normal. As Microsoft acknowledged this problem, it is safe to say it affects a large subset of the platform’s users. While the company does not give usage figures often, its last update put Skype’s monthly active users at 300 million back in 2017. If we assume this problem only affects 1 percent of Skype’s userbase (it is almost certainly more), then that is still 3 million people experiencing problems. I checked my own Skype Instant Messaging and it seems to be working fine for me.
Not Everyone
While the app is not necessarily popular amongst consumers, it is still a go-to messaging tools for prosumers and business users. Users who are affected have reported issues with chat history disappearing and messaging freezing. It will be interesting to see if Microsoft recovers lost history when the app returns to normal.
