Of course, it helps that the deal is not centered on Xbox One and PlayStation 4. Instead, Microsoft and Sony will work together to develop AI solutions and semi-conductors. The only game-related part of the deal is Sony using Microsoft Azure for gaming and entertainment platforms. In an interview with Fortune, Satya Nadella says Sony made the first approach in negotiating the partnership. “First of all, it’s all driven by Sony. They looked at who are all their partners that they can trust. In fact, it turns out, even though we’ve competed, we’ve also partnered,” Nadella says. “Basically and fundamentally the fact that we have a business model in the areas that they’re partnering with us, where we’re dependent on their success. So we will do the best job for them, whether it’s in cloud or whether it’s in A.I. or what have you, in order to make sure that Sony can succeed with their own IP creation.”
Growing Relationship
When it comes to matters such as Cross Play for Minecraft the relationship between the companies has been frosty at best. However, when announcing the partnership earlier this year, both companies were effusive about each other. “Sony has always been a leader in both entertainment and technology. The collaboration we announced today builds on this history of innovation,” Nadella said in a statement. “Our partnership brings the power of Azure and Azure AI to Sony to deliver new gaming and entertainment experiences for customers.”
